Portugal

Written by Eddie

Oikos’ work in Portugal essentially revolves around three major themes related to Global Citizenship: “Education for Global Citizenship”; partnerships to promote the “Common good”; and “Public Influence”.

The primary goal of the projects being undertaken is to eradicate poverty and reduce economic asymmetry and the inequality of knowledge, since these are more than sufficient reasons, in our opinion, to mobilise every citizen. Thus, Oikos believes that the individual and collective effort to achieve a social order which contributes to the elimination of poverty, exclusion and social inequality should focus on the sphere of active citizenship.

Peru

Written by Eddie

Oikos has been present in Peru since 1992, working, until 1999, in partnership with local NGO COPROFAM to implement various projects in the Andes area, geared towards food safety and the generation of income (sustainable means of living), and on the outskirts of Lima, providing support for maternal and child health and child education in the poorest communities.

In 2001 Oikos stationed permanent personnel in the country (their action currently also encompasses Ecuador) to implement projects involving humanitarian action, disaster prevention and preparedness and sustainable living.

Written by Eddie

Oikos has had a permanent presence in Mozambique since 1990, the year in which a cooperation protocol was signed with the Mozambican government. Since then, work has been undertaken in various provinces, especially in Cabo Delgado, Niassa, Nampula, Maputo and Gaza.

Oikos’ priorities for Mozambique are rural development and food safety, training community development agents, boosting community organisations’ capabilities, strengthening local authorities, rehabilitating local infrastructure and resettling displaced populations.

Honduras

Written by Eddie

From 1994 to 1996, Oikos worked in partnership with local organisations in Honduras, especially in the Garífona community (people of African descent). In 1998, a permanent presence was established in the country to implement a number of humanitarian projects in response to Hurricane Mitch, and which continues to promote improved living conditions, in particular of the rural and indigenous populations, to this very day.

Guatemala

Written by Eddie

Oikos has had personnel stationed permanently in Guatemala since 2006. This is one of the poorest countries in Latin America, where the chronic malnutrition, inequality and exclusion levels of the indigenous peoples generate dramatic consequences in terms of food safety.

Oikos’ work has primarily targeted this area, seeking to strengthen sustainable, equitable rural food systems.

El Salvador

Written by Marisa

Oikos has been working in El Salvador since 2001.

Playing an important role, especially in respect of disaster prevention and preparedness, Oikos’ projects in the country currently also reflect a growing concern with the young people in terms of their integration in society and the labour market.

From responding to natural disasters to improving primary healthcare, Oikos has been increasing its technical capacity to set up projects in humanitarian aid and sustainable development. The focus now is on a very current and pertinent subject: environmental sustainability.
