The European Commission is the institute that politically represents and defends the interests of the European Union (EU) in its entirety. Apart from proposing legislation, policies and programmes of action, it is responsible for implementing the decisions taken by the European Parliament and the European Council.

The European Commission has a variety of functions, including representing the EU internationally, negotiating international agreements, essentially in matters of trade and cooperation.

The European Commission is divided into different directorates and departments. The directorates are known as Directorates-General (DG) and they are classified according to the policies for which they are responsible. Oikos’s projects are mainly financed by the Directorate-General for Development and Cooperation – EuropeAid and the Directorate General for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO).
