Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO)

ECHO provides funding for and ensures the cooperation of humanitarian aid operations. The European Union is the leading provider of humanitarian aid in the world and ECHO’s task is help prevent, or address, emergency situations that occur because of crises which seriously affect people living outside the EU, whether as a result of natural disasters or other situations arising from human or structural causes.

The EU’s action is based upon fundamental humanitarian principles and focuses on three areas: emergency aid, food aid and aid for refugees and displaced persons. ECHO coordinates these efforts and cooperates closely with the partners who provide aid in the field, especially the United Nations and NGOs.

Also benefiting from funding from ECHO are the DIPECHO projects (Disaster Preparedness ECHO) which aim to provide specific support for undertakings in Disaster Prevention and Preparedness.
