Project in Haiti

Nº of Beneficiaries: 3.600 people

Starting date: Apr.2010

Ending date: Aug.2011

Improve the living conditions of the population affected by the earthquake in Haiti (2010-2011)

This project, which has financial backing to the tune of 1.6 million Euros, aims to support the rebuilding of the Jacmel, Cayes Jacmel, La Vallée and Marigot area.

Housing equipped with domestic kits and kitchens will be built, adequate sanitary facilities will be created with access to, and storage of, drinking water; hygiene kits will be distributed and training will be given on the subject of hygiene.

Oikos believes that even in an emergency sustainability is the crux of its action. Thus, the differentiating factor in Oikos’ activity lies in the creation of two micro-industries that will provide employment for at least 250 people who will be trained and given the necessary capacity to build from recycled rubble.

The micro-industries will be totally equipped with machinery, tools and supplies so that they can use the rubble recycling technology to produce new building materials that will be employed in the rebuilding of the country. All the necessary workshop facilities will be provided as will the training of technicians, construction workers and helpers.

This project is directly benefiting some 3,600 people. Co-financed by the European Commission (ECHO), it is being undertaken in partnership with local NGO CROSE - Coordination Régionale des Organisations du Sudest.

The Oikos in Haiti was also supported by the Portuguese population, which contributed with 75.000 euros in donations given to this Emergency "Campaign in Haiti".
