Ending date: Dec.2011

Food safety project for the districts of Island of Mozambique, Mossuril and Mogincual (2010-2011)

The districts of Island of Mozambique, Mossuril and Mogincual have been some of the areas of Mozambique where Oikos has been active over the years. These parts of the country suffer repeated natural disasters that totally devastate the lives of the population. Houses, infrastructure, family vegetable plots and means of subsistence are destroyed, leading to conditions of extreme poverty and social and economic vulnerability, leaving communities with few resources with which to rebuild their lives.

Strategies that guarantee greater food safety and the protection of food reserves are essential if the local populations are to gain greater hope of being able to build a safer, more stable life, where they are not as susceptible to external adverse circumstances.

The project also includes a "test field" component to test new crops for their suitability to conditions in the area, and to identify and enable farmers as multipliers in divulging the new crop-growing and irrigation techniques.

This project is directly benefiting around 9,752 people who will serve as multipliers. Co-financed by the European Commission (ECHO), it is being undertaken in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO); the District Government of the Island of Mozambique, Mossuril and Mogincual; the association "LUARTE - Arte, Cidadania e Transformação Social" (Art, Citizenship and Social Transformation); the Mozambican Institute for Agrarian Research (Instituto de Investigação Agrária de Moçambique - IIAM); and the National Disaster Management Institute (Instituto Nacional de Gestão de Calamidades - INGC).
