Prevention Project focusing on the Sexual and Reproductive Health of Adolescents and Young People in the Municipality of La Unión (2010-2013)

Ongoing since May 2010, the project "Creation of Municipal Facilities for Prevention in the Sexual and Reproductive Health of Adolescents and Young People in the Municipality of La Unión" aims to develop the Sexual and Reproductive Health of adolescents and young people at risk in the Porto de Cutuco area in La Unión.

As a border and port region, the Municipality of La Unión is a busy area for both businesspeople and tourists, making it vulnerable to high rates of prostitution, sexual exploitation (including minors) and human trafficking.

Here, 42% of women become mothers before the age of 20 and the fertility rate of 104 births for every 1,000 women between the ages of 15 and 19 is considerably higher than the average for Latin America and the Caribbean (80/1,000).

The action undertaken as part of this project is aimed at promoting a culture of prevention (information and awareness) of Sexually Transmitted Diseases among young people between the ages of 15 and 24 in order to reduce the risks to which they are exposed. Another aspect is the effort to boost the local authority's capacity to develop public policies on the matter by training government staff working in different parts of the municipality.

This project is benefiting 30,045 people including adolescents, young people and their families, from the municipality of La Unión. Co-financed by the European Commission, the project is being undertaken in partnership with local NGO Funsalprodese (consortium leader).
