Strengthening of sustainable, equitable rural food systems in 5 micro-regions in Guatemala (2010-2011)

The main goals of the project to strengthen sustainable and equitable rural food systems in Guatemala are to increase and diversify the availability of foodstuffs and the access to raw materials and agricultural services. Apart from seeds, support materials are also made available to help with the upkeep of family plots in the benefiting populations.

 

Guatemala is one of the poorest countries in Latin America and it has been facing a severe crisis in terms of food and nutrition safety for some years now. According to a report on public health published by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in 2010, Guatemala is one of the countries with highest malnutrition figures in this part of the world.

 

This project is directly benefiting 3,586 families, 350 rural promoters and 350 associates. Co-financed by the European Commission and by the IPAD, it is being undertaken in partnership with the Asociación Comité de Unidad Campesina (CUC) and the Fundación Guillermo Toriello (FGT).
