For a healthy home - the air quality and respiratory diseases in poor households in Honduras (2011-2014)

Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs) are becoming increasingly common in poor Honduran homes. The health and nutrition indicators show high morbidity rates for non-communicable diseases caused by failings in basic sanitation and by an inadequate distribution of human resources in the field of health, making universal access to local services an impossibility.

In Honduras, the main health problems identified in children under the age of five are acute respiratory infections, diarrhoea, skin diseases and malnutrition. In other words, diseases that could be prevented by healthy lifestyles, behaviour and living conditions.

The action undertaken as part of this project involves boosting the capacities of the medical personnel and volunteer health workers in terms of prevention, detection, treatment, assistance and control of NCDs. And this is being done in coordination with awareness campaigns aimed at the media and construction workers so that they can develop and adopt sustainable, accessible house-building technologies.

The intention is to promote healthy lifestyles and behaviours and a positive change in the attitude towards air in the Departments of Francisco Morazán and Yoro, leading to greater urban and rural development and improved social and economic conditions for the local population.

Under this initiative, the Oikos integrates the "Sub-committee Calidad del Aire", which aims to be a platform for consultation for those who want to develop strategies focused on controlling air pollution.

This project is directly benefiting 3.860 people.
