Project in Nicaragua

Nº of Beneficiaries: 24.800 people

Starting date: Dec.2011

End date: Nov.2014

Local low cost Initiatives for the Sustainable Production of Creole Birds

To this end, the intention is to directly improve the knowledge of 4,000 producers about the management of Creole birds, leading to an increase in the amount of food produced and consumed by families, particularly with regard to animal proteins, the consequential impact of which would be the reduction in prevalence of chronic malnutrition (an ongoing problem in the area) and an increase in families’ incomes.

Approximately 84% of the population in the benefiting municipalities live in rural communities and are considered, largely due to the lack of basic services, as being the most vulnerable in Nicaragua, with over 65% living in conditions of extreme poverty.

The project, co-financed by the European Union, will be undertaken in partnership with the Nicaraguan organisations NITLAPAN- Instituto de Investigación y Desarrollo, de la Universidad Centroamericana (UCA) (Central American University Research and Development Institute); AVODEC - Asociación de Voluntarios para el Desarrollo Comunitario (Voluntary Association for Community Development); and Asociación de Educación y Comunicación “La Coculmeca” (“La Coculmeca” Association for Education and Communication).

Expected to last for 36 months, the project will benefit 24,800 people from five municipalities in Jinotega Department:  Pantasma, El Cuá, La Concordia, Wiwilí and Jinotega.
