Nicaragua

Hurricane Felix caused serious damage to crops of rice, cassava, bananas, corn and beans in Nicaragua. The systems of water supply, mostly wells, were destroyed or contaminated, implying a serious risk to public health. This Rehabilitation project aimed to restore the conditions of life of the affected communities in the Tasba Pri territories through measures to improve food security in all intervention communities; shelter and health structures were rehabilitated, and information was disclosed for the preparation of disasters in the form of pilot mitigation works developed with the communities.

Beneficiaries: 2.843 families

Start Date: Nov 2007

End Date: May 2008

The goal of this new Oikos project in Nicaragua is to improve food safety in the municipalities in question by increasing the production of Creole birds in sustainable fashion and resorting to low cost strategies.

Contribute to reduce the impact of natural and man-made disasters threatening the population in some of the most vulnerable settlements in the Caribbean Coast - Atlantic Region.

"The Brooke" wanted to start activities in Nicaragua and Oikos, through its delegation and deep knowledge of the country, was its gateway to Central America. Nicaragua is the second poorest country in Central America, with many horses and donkeys working for the transport of goods and people. Although there are affordable veterinary services in most towns and villages, they have been of poor quality.

Strengthening groups and associations of ground-level producers by promoting their technical and managerial capacities, leading to better access to the market for their products.

Consolidate the processes of community organisation, reinforce the legitimacy, legality and institutionalism of the Community Organisations.
