Dipecho – Addressing the issue of the integration of drainage basins in information, communication and natural disaster response systems in the Department of Ahuachapán.

Historically, Ahuachapán has been the site of emergency situations caused by water and weather related circumstances. Floods and landslides have been the natural disasters which have resulted in the greatest loss of life and property. The interdependence between the higher and lower areas is a sign of how important it is to look at vulnerability to natural disasters from a regional point of view.

These highly dangerous conditions demand an organised, flexible population which is representative of the area and commits to risk management, dissemination of knowledge and the monitoring and exchange of information on natural phenomena that will minimise the probable impacts that a disaster of this nature could cause in their territory. And this is precisely where the importance of this project lies.

It is intended that this initiative, following directly on from previous projects, should strengthen and harmonise the micro-regional early warning system, improving the capacity to inform, coordinate and respond rapidly to disasters affecting the area's vulnerable population, thereby contributing to a lessening of the impact made by the natural disasters.

The project directly benefits 38,841 people at community level, 183 at municipal and departmental level and 100 at regional level. Co-financed by the European Commission (ECHO), it is being undertaken in partnership with the Fundación Salvadoreña Promoción Social y Desarrollo Económico (Funsalprodese); SNET (Servicio Nacional de Estudios Territoriales) and Dirección General de Protección Civil; MINED - El Salvador's Ministry of Education; and the El Salvador fire brigade.
