Project in Mozambique

Nº of Beneficiaries: 1.273 people

Starting date: Jul.2010

Ending date: Sep.2011

This aim of this project on the Island of Mozambique is to improve the response capacity to natural disasters that affect the coastal communities in the Nampula area through the protection of food stocks, water sources and housing.

The intention is to develop a terrestrial and maritime early warning system at district and inter-district level and liaising at provincial level between the Island of Mozambique, Mossuril and Mongincual.

Oikos is also looking to minimise these communities’ dependence on external resources and at the same time to improve skills so that the communities can liaise at municipal and district levels, increasing not only their capacity for prevention but also their response to the natural disasters that do occur here.

This project directly benefits 1,273 people who will serve as multipliers in terms of strategies for preparedness and risk management in their communities. Co-financed by the European Commission (ECHO), it is being undertaken in partnership with the local organisations INGC - Instituto Nacional Gestão de Calamidades (National Disaster Management Institute), Nampula and the association Luarte – Arte, Cidadania e Transformação Social (Art, Citizenship and Social Transformation).
