Project in Portugal

Nº of Beneficiaries: 215.100 people

Starting date: Sep.2011

Ending date: Dec.2013

The "Mãos (Re)forçadas" project arose in September of 2011 as part of an approach of complementarity and strengthening of the objectives set in the project (Es)forçadas e (Des)iguais. With the purpose of raising awareness, (in)forming and mobilizing the population around the phenomena of human trafficking, discrimination and labour exploitation, this new project focuses on the districts of Braga and Póvoa de Lanhoso. It includes a dimension of intervention centred on the potential of artistic expression as an engine for mobilization and local activism around the cause of preventing and combating human trafficking, discrimination and labour exploitation.

From the perspective of continuity and geographical extension of the activities previously created in (Es)forçadas e (Des)iguais , the development of activities directed at the school context is highlighted. Namely, the promotion of (in)formative workshops aimed at teachers, based on the Pedagogic Pack "Human Trafficking and Labour Exploitation – Training, Awareness, Prevention and Combat Strategies in a school context", and the conducting of awareness-raising events for students and trainees, especially those in secondary education.

Looking to meet locally diagnosed needs, as well as to address shared knowledge on the issue of Human Trafficking (HT), special importance was also given to the debate and the transmission of information to participants completing secondary school, and soon to join the national and/or foreign job market, on the steps and precautions necessary to achieve an informed and protected emigration process.

The main objectives of this project, scheduled for implementation until December 2013, are to:

» Promote access to information on the subject of trafficking, labour exploitation and discrimination related to gender vulnerability.

»Raise awareness and strengthen the capacity for action/intervention of vulnerable groups on the issue of labour exploitation and discrimination, including migrant women.

»Strengthen the capacity for strategic intervention of the three Local Volunteer Centres created under the project "(Es)forçadas e (Des)iguais" for interaction, information, public awareness and influence (social advocacy) with local actors and public opinion.

»Develop two new Volunteer Centres for interaction, information, public awareness and influence (social advocacy) with local actors and public opinion.

»Promote the creation and development of labour forums with a view to exchanging knowledge and sound practice among NGOs and/or other institutions, in the area of trafficking, labour exploitation and discrimination related to gender vulnerability.

»Contribute to the creation of an environment favourable to nurturing minorities, thereby encouraging their active participation in processes of information and awareness of civil society in general.

»Contribute to increasing the capacity for civil intervention in the prevention of exploitation phenomena based on multiple forms of discrimination.
