Project in El Salvador

Nº of Beneficiaries: 47.784 people

Starting date: Mar.2010

Ending date: Feb.2013

Since livestock, crop-growing and fishing are the main sources of income for the population of the Bay of Jiquilisco, the aim of this project is to improve the quality of life for inhabitants living in vulnerable circumstances and poverty by creating alternative sources of income based on a proposal for sustainable rural development.

The intention is to create a new model of regional development that will promote the implementation of new forms of production by strengthening the local population's socioeconomic capacity with a view to improving Food and Nutrition Safety.

The Bay of Jiquilisco, in the Department of Usulután, is one of El Salvador's most important areas because of its ecological and economic potential, and because it is the largest wood with saltpans in the country. It also exerts a considerable hydrological influence in the context of the regulation and stability of the regional climate.

This project is benefiting 47,784 people in the Department of Usulután, Municipality of Jiquilisco. Co-financed by the European Commission, it is being developed in partnership with local NGO Funsalprodese (consortium leader).
