Project in Mozambique

Beneficiaries: 1.180 people

Starting date: Apr.2007

Ending date: May 2009

In response to the natural disaster caused by Cyclone Jokwe in 2008, Oikos implemented a project to support the affected population on the Island of Mozambique and Mossuril. The cyclone destroyed more than a hundred boats and agricultural land which provided food to these communities, leaving about 10,000 people without livelihoods.

A year later, in 2009, Oikos, together with these communities, inaugurated 105 fishing boats that are the livelihood of 2,000 families.

Besides recovering the livelihoods of beneficiary families, supporting them in the rehabilitation of their boats and fishing gear, and recovering their agricultural activities, this intervention has initiated a new project to strengthen the same communities in the prevention of natural disasters, enabling them to prevent from damage happening again.

The project was funded by the City Hall of Lakes, banks Caixa Geral de Depositos (represented in Mozambique by BCI Fomento) and Millennium BCP (through the Millenium Bim) and the IPAD - Portuguese Institute for Development Support.

Oikos would like to thank the sponsors and partners involved in this project. Only with your support it was possible to ensure that fishing families recover their livelihoods and begin preparing to face future disasters, in logic of sustainable development.
